If you volunteer on a Sunday morning in the Main Room as either a Mobile Camera Operator or one of our Stage Managers/Hands please be sure to wear pants and your Long Sleeve Production Shirt. The pants do not have to be black, but please not light blue jeans. The long sleeve shirt is just for during the services, so if you would like to during the summer hours to wear another short sleeve short during rehearsal and backstage please feel free to do so.

The reason for this is to be unseen as much as possible while on stage. This helps prevents camera ops from being seen directly in other camera operators shots. For Stage Managers/Hands it keeps you guys in the dark better during stage transitions.

Below is an excerpt from one of the many new training materials that are being added to the Video Training page (click here to access the page). Read the material below to gain more knowledge on three key elements when shooting & directing each Sunday you are volunteering.

The Rule of Thirds

The Rule of Thirds states that you should mentally divide the frame (what you see in the viewfinder) into thirds, both vertically and horizontally. What you get is like a tic-tac-toe board overlaying your screen. When you shoot your video, according to this rule, you should place your key subject elements along those lines. Where the lines intersect will be the best place for your subject. That means that centering your subject in the frame will create a less interesting composition. In most cases you will have control over where you are with your camera. When framing your subject, move the camera so that the prominent subject elements fall along one of the third lines, preferably at a point where those lines intersect.

Headroom

Headroom refers to the amount of space between the top of a person’s head and the top of your frame. Too much headroom makes the person appear to be sinking. Most beginning videographers will frame shots of people with too much headroom. Too little headroom places visual emphasis on the person’s chin and neck. When framing shots of people, pay attention to where the eyes appear. Follow the rule of thirds and place the subject’s eyes on the upper third line.

Reminder: When framing shots of people, don’t forget to avoid placing the edge of your frame at one of the body’s natural cutoff lines: neck, elbows, waist, knees and ankles.

Lead Room/Space

Lead Room/Space refers to space in front of your subject. Leave extra space in the direction your subject is looking. You might also see this space referred to as look space or nose room. Leave extra space in front of a moving person (ie: during announcements or message segments). Not doing so will make it look like your subject is in danger of running into the edge of your frame.

Rule of Third Examples:

This year we are holding six identical services over the span of two days at PC3 with three different teams. The service time blocks are:

• Saturday: 4pm & 6pm (call time @ 1:00pm)
• Sunday: 9am & 11am (call time @ 7:00am)
• Sunday: 4pm & 6pm (call time @ 2:00pm)

We are trying to staff the Saturday services with as many PC3 staff members as possible and leave the Sunday rotation normal if at all possible. We are still short volunteers during all three blocks. So we have listed below the spots that are open. If you can look over the open positions and then look at your schedule to see if you would be available and willing to fill in a spot.

Saturday:
Stage Manager – 1 needed
CG #2 Lyrics – 1 needed

Sunday AM:
Mobile Camera – 1 needed
CG#1 Video Playback – needed

Sunday PM:
Stage Manager – 1 needed

The reason for the requirement is to keep our team continuing to grow in our skills and find new ways to polish our skills together. The training nights will last no more than two hours max, usually less. We will cover the basics for 30 minutes each session, then followed by 1 to 1 1/2 hours of new topics not discussed in your beginner training days.

We will schedule the Training Sessions through Planning Center Online along with a detail setlist discussing the topics of the night. We cannot wait to get the first session under our belt and to begin growing closer as a team on these special nights!

The next Advanced Studio Camera training will be held on March 29th, 2010. We will take it back to the basics for the first half of the night together. The 2nd half we will dive into some advanced techniques such as: Rack Focus, Composition in regards to other Cam Ops, Rule-of-Thirds

The next Advanced CG training will be held on April 12th. We will have an in depth look into Pro Presenter 4, which we just updated it in our Main Room video control room. You will learn how to edit new Message Templates, cue up Grow Zone #’s & edit lyric slides with the new editor

The next Advanced Director/AD/Switcher training will be held on April 19th, 2010. We will come together as a team to discuss how to help better the front-line. We will look at previous “game” footage as well as discuss new ways to lead the rest of team.

The lanyards will stay at the church, and you can pick them up on the Sunday you’re serving.  Just remember to return them to the Green Room or the Video Control Room before your leave!  By keeping all the lanyards at the church, you won’t have to worry about keeping up with your nametag so that you have it each time you serve.

New Production Lanyard

On Sunday you received an email from me through Google Docs that had a survey link in it. Here is the explanation of that email that I should have included.

Our mission is To Reach People and Help Them Walk with God. You guys are a BIG part of the Reach People part of the mission statement by serving on the Production Team each weekend. You all provide weekly a very engaging environment that welcomes new guest & returning guest. An environment that helps people take the next step towards a relationship with Jesus. The second part of that mission statement is heavy on the People Care of our church (along with multitude of other ministries and personal relationships). You often here that life change happens best in community and Small Groups is where we believe that can happen the best.

So with that, one of my personal goals this year is to see you guys get into small groups together. If you are currently in a small group then you are where you need to be. We are not looking to take people out of groups. But if you are currently not in a small group I will be giving you a call with a “beta” idea in mind.

This weekend we step into Part 2 of our series titled, “Life Happens”. Mike kicked off the New Year last week with Week 1 and the team absolutely killed it! Usually after taking a Sunday off and everyone leaving for Christmas vacation we come back a little rusty. Well 2010 proved to be  a little different with Richard Perry leading the Video Team off the line while firing on all cylinders. So a big thanks to the entire team, both AM & PM last week for bringing your A-game to the table.

This weekend we have a full crew on the schedule, which means we are currently not missing a single position. This is great news and means we are getting back to full strength after a holiday filled two months.

Starting Point Promo Video - this will play during the Welcome/Announcement segment; Mike will briefly setup the video from stage

Chad Brewer - Chad Brewer will be leading everyone along beside Jennifer Ford this weekend. This is Chad’s first time leading with us on Sunday morning (since moving to 250 Vision Drive). Chad usually is down the hall each weekend leading Tsunami & Ripple Effect. So everyone be sure to say hello if you can.
